About Sandra

Sandra Leupold is a renowned opera director.

As a Metropol Guru, she offers exclusive behind-the-scenes insights: She shares the creative processes behind major productions, presents personal perspectives on Berlin’s opera houses, and draws on decades of university teaching and publications.

With more than 60 productions on German and international stages, Sandra Leupold has shaped contemporary opera through her clear and uncompromising directorial concepts. For her production of Don Carlo, Sandra Leupold became the first woman to receive the German Theater Award FAUST; numerous nominations and audience awards attest to the widespread acclaim of her remarkable work.

Sandra Leupold first studied musicology under Carl Dahlhaus at Technische Universität Berlin and then went on to study opera directing at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin, where her teachers included Peter Konwitschny and Ruth Berghaus.. As an assistant director, she collaborated with George Tabori, Hans Neuenfels, Jürgen Rose, and Karl-Ernst Herrmann.
