A Cultural-Historical Journey Through Music and Dance, from Modernism to the Present

This special city excursion invites you to rediscover Berlin through the history of tango.

Alongside music manager Piotr Tomaszewski, you follow the path of a dance that began as a provocation, became a fashion phenomenon, was politically appropriated, and finally re-emerged reinvented. Across four carefully chosen locations, city history intersects with music, biographies, and atmospheric moments.

Start at Potsdamer Platz – Tango and Early Modernism

Your journey begins at Potsdamer Platz, once one of Europe’s most vibrant entertainment districts. At the Panorama Café, you will receive an introduction to the origins of tango in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, as well as its early reception in Berlin.

Historical photographs bring to life the legendary amusement venues of the early 1900s. Dance halls and variety theaters shaped a cityscape where tango was both scandalous and a fashionable statement. A guided walk then leads toward Friedrichstraße.

Friedrichstraße – Tango in the Weimar Republic

In the heart of Berlin’s nightlife of the 1920s, tango emerged as an expression of urban sophistication and longing. In cabarets, theaters, and dance halls, it was not only danced but also musically developed.

Learn about the so-called German Tango, its connection to popular songs, film, and revue, and its firm place in pop culture. A short musical excerpt brings the soundscape of this era vividly to life. From there, the excursion continues to Bebelplatz.

Bebelplatz – Ruptures and Suppression

At the site of the book burnings, attention turns to the Nazi period. Selected biographies illustrate the persecution of Jewish, Slavic, and oppositional artists, as well as the survival of tango in secret and the regime-approved, “synchronized” tango of those years.

From there, the route takes you north to Prenzlauer Berg.

Prenzlauer Berg – Rediscovery and Renewal

In the Kollwitzkiez, tango experienced a renaissance after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In courtyards and studios, it was rediscovered as an open, international art form.

At one of these tango studios, you will witness a short, exclusive dance performance.

The evening concludes with a shared dinner at JÓMO Restaurant. The fusion cuisine delightfully mirrors what makes tango unique: the creative blending of diverse cultural influences.
